Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch
9/11/09Resident My neighbor on Monte Verde told me that last week they had a person standing in their driveway at 10:30 PM! They left after the motion light came on. What's strange about the sighting is that the person was able to walk around two other motion detectors on the detached garage. This should be a reminder that you need to know your neighbors and watch out for strange vehicles, people and noises. When you drive down the road, look up or down your neighbors drive way!
1/26/06Roxanne Oldani Dear Community,
My name is Roxanne Oldani, owner of Climate Control Window Films. We specialize in the application of security films that protect your existing glass and help protect against break in's. Thieves have to bust the window completely out of the frame to enter and usually don't want the hassle. If your neighborhood watch is interested, please call me at 907-279-7080. We give discounts for neighborhoods where multiple people would like their glass protected!
1/26/06Clint Meyer As road service Chair, I am ordering another clusterbox of mailboxes. However, it won't be until late spring before I can commit to installing them and even then I will need help (any volunteers?). Our other commissioner, Mario Gho, is taking orders now. Go to the Community Players tab on this (wonderful) website to get his information if you are interested in purchasing a locking mailbox (it's a one time purchase).
11/29/04Trooper Dispatch Search warrants led to the recovery of a large amount of property; believed to be stolen. Investigators seized several snowmachines, snowmachine parts, all terrain vehicles, trailers, guns, tools, and building materials. The items appear to be from private residences, construction sites, as well as commercial businesses. Investigators are still processing the evidence to determine how much of it is stolen and attempting to connect it to known cases where possible.

Anyone who has been the victim of a theft of the above mentioned items is asked to contact Investigator Wilcox of the Alaska State Troopers at 451-5332.
3/18/04Jen Athey About 40 people from Goldstream Valley attended the burglary presentation by Trooper Roberts on 3/11/04. I met other Goldstream residents who are interested in setting up a Valley-wide information website with the status of crime in the Valley, with info contributions from the Alaska State Troopers. If you are interested in helping with the Neighborhood Watch project, please contact Jen Athey at 456-3092.
9/7/03Jen Athey Neighborhood Watch signs are up around Moose Mountain. Thank you!

Notes from Alaska State Trooper meeting on 3/11/04

In nationwide statistics 75% of burglarized houses are unlocked. Thieves look for targets of opportunity - rural areas where houses are far apart, unlocked doors, valuable items in view from windows, etc. Some things you can do to make your house less of an attractive target are:

  • Leave a light and TV or radio on. Dogs are usually too friendly to make an effective deterrent.
  • Shut the blinds. Thieves will often case a house at night, looking through lit windows for likely loot. During the day, look for footprints around the light perimeter of your house.
  • Motion sensing lights.
  • Video surveillance - you can buy fake cameras that have the same affect.
  • Practice neighborhood watch - it's the most effective crime deterrent.
    • Two or three burglaries per week occur in the Fairbanks-North Pole area. Items commonly taken include firearms, sporting goods, jewelry, and electronics. FBI says that less than 10% of stolen property is recovered. In the event you're robbed, here are some things you can do to keep your important things safe or increase the chances of getting them returned.

    • Put valuables in a safe, mark the safe as yours, and firmly attach the safe to the house.
    • Keep valuables in an unlikely place, like a tomato soup can.
    • Keep a list of high-priced items.
    • Take pictures of jewelry.
    • Write down serial numbers.
    • Mark tools and electronics with unique paint colors.
      • Some miscellaneous information:

      • Keep weapons unloaded. Burglars are more likely to get a weapon from your own house.
      • Thieves are more likely to kick a door down than to break glass to get into your house.
      • Things to remember when identifying a vehicle to the police -other than license plate- are # of doors, make and model, and any damage.
      • Burglars are terrible drivers.

          Crime Alerts

1/1/06Andrew Johnson We just returned from a vacation to see our lockbox forced open and of course empty. They got a couple netflix movies again, and I'm not sure what else. We'll be contacting the troopers again.

          Andrew and Marcy (3051 Monteverde)
12/20/05Cadigan We too have had mail stolen from our mail. I think it happened the first week of December. Birthday money and gift cards were stolen.
12/9/05Jen Athey I saw on the news tonight that a house on Jennifer Drive was burglarized by three men wearing ski masks. They broke the door down, pepper-sprayed the owner, who was on the phone, and her dog. They thought she was on the phone with the Troopers and left. I'll post the related Trooper Dispatch report when it becomes available.
10/24/05Marcy Phillips Watch your credit card bills closely!! I had my credit card bill stolen and 3 courtesy checks were used in Walmart. You would think this person(s) would be smarter then this. Felony check fraud and felony stolen mail. Once they get caught it will be hell to pay.
10/19/05Marcy Phillips Two new residents up at Monteverde, I love living on the mountain. It seems that our mail is being stolen as well. I think someone checks it every day as we didn't get any mail for an entire week once (I don't come home until around 7:00pm and I check my mail on the way up Moose Mountain). We have reported it to the Troopers so if anyone would like to contribute to this report send me an e-mail. Otherwise enjoy the winter weather!
10/3/05Andre Breton Mail thieves updated description:
Woman – Age 18-24 (no younger or older); likely 19, 20 or 21 years old; Long dark brown hair, possibly down to her waist; Mixed white and Alaskan Native blood; eyes dark, possibly brown; because of her ‘mixed blood’ features, she appears “exotic”; She is very pretty; She is confident, not nervous; She dresses trendy- casual, not hippie; the waitress describes her as a “typical Fairbanks young person”.

Guy – Age 18-24 (no older or younger); likely 19, 20, or 21; probably short brown hair but this was covered up with a red or orange baseball cap; he was wearing a nylon coat; while in the coffee shop/restaurant, he was “wandering around, carrying a stack a books, and occasionally reading”. The guy is ‘white’, not Hispanic or Mixed, etcetera.

As usual, the woman signed the check and paid the bill; hence her description of the ‘guy’ is much less detailed than the womans. By the way, the woman wrote her license number, expiration date, and phone number (all fabricated) on the check before the server had a chance to ask; the server never saw her license, which we believe from the Walmart footage has been doctored in some way.

Thank you for all of your help, and I hope this most recent evidence helps us to make progress!
10/3/05Andre Breton My wife and I recently moved to Moose Mountain. Unfortunately 150 bank checks were stolen out of our mailbox; but don’t worry, we still recognize Moose Mountain as being a wonderful place, and we love our new home!

Please ask folks to keep this flyer (link removed) away from anyone they don’t trust. I’ve been handing them to business managers all over town and some have offered to hang the flyer in their window! I’d rather the ‘crooks’ are surprised when a clerk, armed with the knowledge on the attached flyer, starts dialing 911.

Thank you for your help. My Best, - andré
9/14/05Roger Evans This weekend the Moose Mountain Rental shop was broken into. Two new furnaces that were to replace the drip stoves were stolen, the door to the rental shop broken, and the orange atco with private skis and boards broken into. Please be aware of suspicious activity, and if you have information that might help catch the perps, please email or call 455-8362. Thanks, Roger
5/22/05Jen Athey Mail is still being stolen from mailboxes at the corner of Moose Mountain and Spinach Creek roads. The thief has cashed a check meant for a resident. The remaining metal, locking mailboxes are selling fast and the road service area is looking into purchasing more units.
5/4/05Resident Mail was stolen from a mailbox at the corner of Moose Mountain Road and Spinach Creek Road. The thief ran up over $1,000 on a new credit card.
11/22/04Resident Persons forced entry into Monteverde residence and removed a HP series 330 Notebook Laptop computer, several pieces of jewelry and prescription medications. The loss is estimated at $6,000. Anyone with information is urged to contact AST at 451-5100. The break-in happened between 11am and 4:30pm.
3/18/04Chris Worker Someone in a dual rearwheel truck pulled into the Worker's driveway and left footprints around their phonebox. ACS said it wasn't them. Chris called Trooper Roberts about the tracks, and she was told to watch her long distance phone bill. There is another incident of someone pulling into a house and making tons of long distance calls on a phonebox.
1/12/04 Mario Gho Please let the neighborhood know that a house on Hardluck Drive was broken into this morning and several items stolen from it. The State Troopers indicated that another house on Coyote Trail was also broken into today. Please report any unusual traffic or movement you may have noted and let's practice neigborhood watch. Thanks, Mario Gho
12/5/03 Roger Evans Moose Mountain Ski Area was vandalized by a group of snowmachiners on Wed night, perhaps from the neighborhood, who put a lot of effort into tearing up our steepest runs and stripping them to the dirt. They seem to enter from the Meribel/Pipeline/Monteverde area, and they make a lot of tracks around the neighborhood as well. If anyone knows who they are, perhaps you could inform us. The troopers would like to have a word with them.
p.s. Do you know where your teens were riding on Wednesday night?
Thanks. Roger Evans, Moose Mountain, Inc.
10/15/03Jen Athey Alert -- Fred Sturmann's house was broken-into and robbed on 10/14/03, sometime during the day. Please report any unusual cars or suspicious people to the State Police. Fred lives at the end of Tekapo Court. Given the recent vandalism and thefts, please take suitable precautions to protect your property.
